CNN’s Eva McKend Marries at a “Majestic” Maryland Estate — Inside Her Elegant Wedding Weekend
When CNN correspondent Eva McKend married Dennis R. Bates Jr. in a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by friends and family, the couple chose a setting as timeless as their love story — a majestic private estate on 300 acres in Frederick, Maryland.
As featured exclusively in PEOPLE Magazine, the weekend celebration took place at Morningside Inn, a scenic countryside venue known for its rolling hills, ponds, and sweeping farmland views. PEOPLE referred to Morningside Inn as a “majestic private venue on 300 acres” — the perfect backdrop for the couple’s intimate and meaningful celebration.
McKend and Bates, who met on Bumble in 2019, wanted their wedding to feel accessible, natural, and centered on connection. “For us, a ceremony outdoors was key,” McKend told PEOPLE. “We wanted to feel connected to nature, but paramount is for people to be able to attend and feel comfortable.”
Guests were treated to a three-day celebration filled with thoughtful touches — from a Caribbean welcome dinner to heartfelt readings by family and friends. McKend wore a flowing Wtoo by Watters gown from Anthropologie, tailored by a close family friend. Her simple yet elegant lavender, ivory, and dusty blue décor allowed the beauty of Morningside Inn’s setting to speak for itself.
The outdoor ceremony was filled with music and meaning — including a violin performance of “Canon in D Major” and the bride’s emotional walk down the aisle to CeCe Winans’ “Goodness of God.”
Inside the reception hall, guests enjoyed Maryland-inspired hors d’oeuvres like crab cake canapés and danced the night away to the couple’s first dance song, “All My Life” by K-Ci and JoJo. In lieu of a traditional cake, the couple delighted everyone with late-night Insomnia Cookies, adding a sweet, modern twist to their classic evening.
Reflecting on their day, McKend told PEOPLE, “Getting married means cementing our relationship, for life. It was important to have our families and friends in attendance to witness the commitment we are making to each other.”
From the rolling hills and rustic elegance of the grounds to the joyful energy that filled every corner, Eva and Dennis’ wedding beautifully showcased what makes Morningside Inn one of Maryland’s most sought-after wedding venues — a peaceful retreat where every couple can create their own unforgettable story.
